New Iphone Add-On Finds Cancer


SCIENTISTS have come up with a new gadget that lets the iPhone detect CANCER.

Good call ... mobile phone gadget Handyscope can detect skin cancer

The Handyscope, which launches today, plugs into the Apple phone and converts it into a dermatoscope, which doctors use to find skin cancer.

It uses a polarising light to detect whether a mole is abnormal, before taking a picture of it and sending it off to a doctor to check.

Target ... device spots skin cancer

The image can then even be posted off to a second opinion service where world-renowned specialists can weigh in with their view.
Now experts have come out to say it could be very helpful in battling the disease.

Dr David Pye, a researcher based at Salford University, said:
"This is a powerful piece of kit which could be very useful for people in the profession assessing whether a mole is cancerous.

"Sending images around the world for expert diagnosis could be incredibly helpful and this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this before.

"During a mole examination you're looking for things like irregular edges and unusual colouration, which the device would be very good at picking up.

"However, I don't think it will be Joe Bloggs performing examinations at home - this is likely to be for doctors who could do with a second opinion."

Handyscope is made by German-based firm FotoFinder and any data is encrypted and can be password protected to keep it confidential.

At £995 for the gadget and £6.99 for the app needed to use it, the technology is not cheap.


But the firm behind it said the device had the potential to save lives.

Marketing manager Valeska Heinrich said:
"The Handyscope combines the latest communication technology with a sophisticated tool for skin cancer screening, opening up a new era for cancer diagnosis.

"This is a very exciting innovation and the first of its kind in the world. The Handyscope makes skin examinations much more convenient by allowing them to be carried out anywhere.

"The brilliant dermatoscopic photos on-screen show important details at a glance, so a decision can quickly be made on whether a mole is suspicious."

Top 6 Rules For Social Networks

In recent days, we've spent time with a number of veterans of the social networking business. One of the surprising things we have learned is how much experience these people now have, and how much they agree with each other about some of the basics of the business.

Just a few years ago, when companies like Friendster were emerging and outfits like Twitter still did not exist, social networking was a little-understood phenomenon. Experience has taught us a lot, however, and practices are starting to standardize. That is not to say that something new will not pop up, or that no new business will be created; this is still capitalism, with plenty of room to surprise. Whatever does happen next, however, the emerging rules will likely play a role, either in system construction or creative destruction.


Here are six points everyone seems to agree on...


1. When you have scale, it's good to fail.

When you have millions of users, you can, and should, experiment with some small percentage of them all the time. The field is so new that there are no set rules, and failure is tolerable for the sake of a decent feedback loop. "Things change so fast, you are best off just doing things by trial and error," says Gina Bianchini, founder and chief executive of Ning, a service that provides a template of design tools for people to build their own social networks. About 5,000 networks are created every day on Ning, and 80% of them are short-lived or fail. That still gives Ning 250,000 networks on which it can place ads, watch behavior or charge for premium services.

2. Seek the unique.

There are too many social networks, too many styles of discovery, commenting, sharing and all the other aspects of participation. People are fatigued by choice. All is made worthwhile by finding a group that is as passionate about some specific area of your life as you are. That may be work, a la LinkedIn, but don't expect most people to socialize there. That may be family, like with Facebook, but you tend not to see such a broad range of behaviors. The third aspect of most lives--hobbies and interests--is where you encounter the greatest variety. If there is room to grow a new social network, it will have to center on a passion, something people feel is particularly true of their own personalities.

3. The default position is rampant suspicion.

Trust is possibly the most valuable currency on a social network. At its best, people are giving up important parts of their identity. Doing so successfully, so that fans, friends, and like-minded strangers respect them, binds users closely to the network. That loyalty is perpetually at risk, however, and network designers say users' worries are manifest when they don't understand something about the social network.

"In the absence of information, there is an assumption of conspiracy," says Jay Adelson, one of the founders of Digg, a social news site. That may be simply because social networks are so new, or that the medium of computer networks lends itself to fears of anonymous control. The solution, from a provider's viewpoint, is to be as clear as possible about why you are doing something, even when it seems obvious to you.


4. Trust is at stake, so make things opaque.

Paradoxically, being open also involves refusing to disclose certain things, particularly things about how ranking and filtering systems work. "All algorithms get hacked by somebody," says Kevin Laws, a former executive with Epinions, a social rating site that was purchased by Shopping.com. "You have to remove the transparency around how your algorithms actually work." The audience can only trust the system if they know that the system cannot be gamed, and that means they can't know everything.

5. Esteem is how you gather value.

French playwright Moliere compared writing to prostitution: You start off doing it for love, then for a few friends and finally for money. The history of the social Web is basically the opposite. Sites like Epinions and Digg began by paying people money to comment on things, and found nothing but problems--some people gamed the system, while others did not trust the results. As in open source software, a lot of the positive motivation to participate comes from the recognition you receive from other participants for doing a good job. Money just confuses things.

6. Secret names were made for flames. To raise the bar, say who you are.

When Digg started, Adelson recalls, "anonymity was key; there was a sense people needed privacy. Now people are used to living in public." Part of that may be an effect of Facebook, a wildly successful site with very little anonymity. One-third of Digg's new users come from the Facebook Connect service, and these folks are used to being seen by others. They tend to behave more responsibly as a result, and may get better value in terms of how much others trust them. Down the road, they are also likely to be targeted with more personal ads--whether that is an intrusion or a value-add is a rule that has yet to be worked out.

Top 10 Ways To Destroy ' The Internet '

WHILE swimming in the endless sea of news, blogs, social networks and mindless ballyhoo - one has to wonder how to make it stop.

The internet seems to be all-powerful and indestructible - but in theory it can be destroyed in a number of outlandish ways. check out how could you do that ...

1. Cut the cables

To destroy the internet, a strategic starting point would be to destroy the undersea cables that connect every continent.
You could use submarines with giant scissors - but the cables are not that difficult to destroy. Earthquakes, fishing trawlers and shark bites have been known to cause breaks.

2. Cyber war

Cyberspace could become the battlefield of choice for countries wishing to gain the upper hand in an international arena.
Nations could deploy armies of hackers instead of armed military forces to disrupt communications, launch unstoppable viruses and take out sections of the internet. When two superpowers go to cyberwar, the cost will not be in blood, but in 404's.

3. Subvert DNS

Security researcher Dan Kaminsky last year stumbled across a vulnerability in the Domain Name System (DNS) that had the potential to destroy the internet's foundations.
The security flaw allowed hackers to potentially reroute users to any website or block access.
According to Securosis analyst Rich Mogull: "You'd have the internet, but it wouldn't be the internet you expect. (Hackers) would control everything."

4. Eliminate the hardware

Destroying the hardware that allows internet access would be improbable, but not impossible.
This would mean that every single online communications system would have to go down.
One way would be disabling electronics with an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) within a 10km radius. It's not effective on a worldwide scale, but if the idea can be manipulated for a global EMP then it might be feasible

5. Censorship

Both the internet and the World Wide Web were designed as open forums for free ideas and expression, but countries have pushed to censor objectionable materials.
Countries such as China have implemented strong censorship in an attempt to neutralize political opposition. This is dubbed "The Great Firewall of China".
Although censoring the internet only affects parts of the global community, it destroys the idea on which the network was created

6. Botnets

A botnet is the name given to a collection of infected computers (or "zombies") that automatically distribute malicious software, viruses, spam and trojans in an attempt to infect other computers.
The Conficker worm came from a particularly nasty botnet estimated to have burrowed its way into almost nine million computers worldwide. It had the potential of producing 10 billion articles of spam per day

7. Spam

Spam is an inevitable consequence of the internet with advertisers, marketers and Nigerian scams all trying to exploit users.
Spammers all over the world use thousands of zombie computers and in 2007, SophosLabs found that over a quarter of the world's spam originated in the US.
Not only is spam incredibly annoying, it may be used to transmit viruses, trojans and malicious software with the intent of corrupting more computers, turning them into zombies

8. Unstoppable virus

Similar to the scenes in Terminator 3, a self-replicating computer virus with the potential to distribute itself globally and become invulnerable to destruction may not only spell the end of the internet, but the end of humanity

9. Hack the servers

Internet service providers (ISPs) link customers to the world wide web. If they were taken down systematically, many people would lose online access.
This would essentially starve the web of users, content and traffic..


10. Switch off

Switching off means that if everyone connected to a system that accesses the world wide web turns off, it would become a barren wasteland of unclicked hyperlinks and unwatched videos.
So instead of viewing technology galleries you might actually be doing your work

Travel Pods For The iPod Generation

LONDON'S Heathrow Airport is rolling out futuristic driverless pods to shuttle passengers between terminals and the airport car park.

Future ... the ULTra Personal Pod, described as a driverless taxi, is being rolled out at the UK's Heathrow Airport.

Relax ... the pods will be a much easier way of getting around.

Family pod ... each pod is capable of carrying four adults and two children along with their luggage.

Drive away... the futuristic driverless pods will shuttle passengers between London's Heathrow Airport and the airport car park.

Space station ... the pods have a unique look.

Ultra modern ... the Personal Rapid Transport system was created by ULTra, Advanced Transport Systems.

Drive time ... Heathrow says passengers will have to wait no longer than a minute for their pod to arrive.

My pod ... by typing flight details into the onboard computer or swiping details from a frequent flyer card, the pod will take passengers straight to the correct terminal.

Practice run ... the pods are being rolled out at Heathrow Airport.

Power play ... when still the pods' battery will recharge and will use 70 per cent less energy than a car. Track star ... the pods will be a vast improvement on the existing shuttle buses which use conventional roads around the airport.

Door to door ... eighteen battery-powered pods went on trial earlier this year, taking passengers from Terminal 5 to their cars.

Success ... ULTra's first test trip took place at Heathrow on September 21, 2008.

Peek inside ... the interior is quite spacious.

Pass ... the test checked on the aerodynamic effects of two vehicle passing each other at maximum speed.

All over ... If the trial at Terminal 5 is a success, Heathrow hopes to roll out the system across the entire airport – covering 48km of track.

Conficker Virus Started Sending Spam From Infected PCs

ONE of the world's biggest computer worms has activated and is now sending spam from personal computers.

The malicious software known as Conficker is slowly starting weeks after being dismissed as a false alarm, security experts said.

Conficker, also known as Downadup or Kido, is quietly turning thousands of PCs into servers of email spam and installing spyware, they said.

The worm started spreading late last year, infecting millions of computers and turning them into "slaves" that respond to commands sent from a remote machine that controls an army of computers known as a botnet.

Many feared it would wreak havoc on April 1, but instead the worm mutated to make it harder to catch.

Its unidentified creators started using infected machines for criminal purposes in recent weeks by loading more malicious software onto a small percentage of computers under their control, said Vincent Weafer, a vice president with Symantec Security Response.

"Expect this to be long-term, slowly changing," he said. "It's not going to be fast, aggressive."



What the worm does ?

Conficker installs a second virus, known as Waledac, that sends out email spam without knowledge of the PC's owner, Mr Weafer said.

It also installs a fake anti-spyware program so users would be led to believe their computer's safe.

"This is probably one of the most sophisticated botnets on the planet. The guys behind this are very professional. They absolutely know what they are doing," said Paul Ferguson, a senior researcher with Trend Micro.

He said Conficker's authors likely installed a spam engine and another malicious software program on tens of thousands of computers since April 7. The worm will stop distributing the software on infected PCs on May 3 but more attacks will likely follow.

"We expect to see a different component or a whole new twist to the way this botnet does business," said Mr Ferguson.

Viruses that turn PCs into slaves exploit weaknesses in Microsoft's Windows operating system. The Conficker worm is especially tricky because it can evade corporate firewalls by passing from an infected machine onto a USB memory stick, then onto another PC.

The Conficker botnet is one of many such networks controlled by syndicates that authorities believe are based in eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, China and Latin America.



What you can do ? 

First of all, make sure your PC has the latest patch from Microsoft and update your security software. If you cannot access your anti-virus maker's website, your PC may already be infected.

In general, you should always be careful when clicking on unknown links. Use LinkScanner to find out if a link leads to dangerous content, and be wary of pop-up windows prompting you to install software such as antivirus or video player updates.

How Facebook Changed Our Culture

The internet is now the platform on which most of us live our lives, finds Nicholas Blincoe in two histories of the electronic age .

Over the summer of 2007, Facebook exploded across London. By the autumn, one-in-seven Londoners had posted their pictures and profiles online, proving that the web was no longer an arena for geeks and gossip hounds, music buffs, porn-addicts and lonely hearts. Or, at least, it was no longer just for them. It was for everyone. On a mass impulse many of us jumped on-board the electronic merry-go-round. Did we do it in a spirit of adventure or resignation? Was it inevitable or had we gone mad?

Cyburbia by James Harkin is a swift-moving history that provides a concise answer: yes, we are nuts and worse, we can no longer opt out. Click, by the self-proclaimed internet data junkie Bill Tancer, only reinforces this fact: our lives have changed irrevocably.

If one single factor changed the face of the internet, it was broadband. Once the internet was switched on all the time, everyone from toddlers to maiden aunts became intimate with it. We began bidding on eBay, playing contract bridge or World of Warcraft, singing along to CBeebies, sharing photos and rewriting Wikipedia. By this time, the history of computing had already moved through two distinct phases.

In the Eighties, computers were little more than fancy calculators with added typewriter functions. The Nineties brought email and online shopping to create a kind of alternative electronic reality. With broadband, there came a third phase. The world that computing makes possible could no longer be thought of as parallel to the real world: the two had merged. The web is now the platform on which we live our lives. From this point on, the story of computing is no longer the history of a machine. It is the story of a culture – our culture – though it is barely five years old.

Bill Tancer’s job is selling intelligence to businesses. His big claim is that he is not dealing in predictions but arbitrage: he knows when the market has moved before you do because he gets his information at an earlier stage. His company, Hitwise, has access to millions of internet searches. He is the guy to go to if you want to know the number one question in America (“How to tie a tie”; the 51st question in more dapper Britain).

In Click, he describes how he honed his arbitrage skills predicting the winner of the American version of Strictly Come Dancing. Tancer noticed the high number of searches for one of the last remaining dancers and took this as a sign of interest in her dancing skills. But he failed to notice the interest came from young men searching for hot pictures of a female wrestler competitor. Since then, Tancer has learnt to pay closer attention to the trail of clicks that take internet users from one site to another and his arbitrage talents have significantly improved as a result.

The trail of connections is the key feature of the new web. This is because we are no longer consumers of product – browsing sites as we may once have browsed shops or television channels. Many of us actively produce and pass on information, thus letting everyone else know what we find interesting. Search engines such as Google rank sites by popularity and so exponentially increase the responsiveness of the web to new information. Tancer suggests only one per cent of us regularly produce content, but another nine per cent do it irregularly; for instance, older people tend to edit Wikipedia, passing on their knowledge to callow youths.

Harkin’s Cyburbia leaps off from this idea: that the new web is an endlessly responsive source of information. The word for this process is “feedback”, a term invented by the mathematician Norbert Wiener, who developed the idea while attempting to improve air defences during the blitz. Wiener began to think of the theatre of war as a single system – he saw the business of tracking bombers, plotting coordinates, and aiming anti-aircraft guns – all the while, the Luftwaffe would alter their courses in response – as part of the same big picture. Harkin argues that the maths that developed out of Wiener’s insight – known as cybernetics – now underpins the internet.

He also argues that Wiener was responsible for a cultural shift that led his followers to see feedback loops everywhere, and then develop the tools to make the loops tighter and the feedback swifter.

According to Harkin, Wiener’s earliest disciples were hippies of San Francisco and his book tracks their path from kitchen‑table publishing to huge software companies, arguing in the process that it is no accident that San Francisco is the Hollywood of computing.

By charting the story of our new lives from the London blitz to the summer of Facebook, Harkin is inclined to see the web as a kind of warfare, a place where we are twitchily avid for information, devouring it as though our lives depended on it.

If war is his starting point, it is little wonder his conclusion suggests we are all shell shocked. But Cyburbia is a persuasive book, and a brave step in thinking about the mess we may have all got ourselves into.

Top 10 Biggest Computer Viruses Ever

Jerusalem (1987) ... one of the earliest and most successful viruses activated each year on Friday the 13th — either displaying a message or deleting any programs that ran on the day. The virus, dubbed Jerusalem, installed itself in the target computer's memory when an infected file was opened.

Early versions of Jerusalem — one instance of which was found in a military office in Israel — repeatedly infected files until the computer became overwhelmed by their size. It remained active throughout the 1990s, infecting many computers in enterprises and government offices and becoming a popular template for future viruses due to its simple code.

Stoned (1987) ... old viruses never die — that was the warning from anti-virus experts after the Stoned virus resurfaced in 2007, a full 13 years after it was written. The Stoned — or Marijuana — virus became widespread in the early 1990s. It was the most successful virus in terms of number of infections, infiltrating hard drives and the boot sector of floppy disks.

The most common effect of Stoned was to display a message on the screen when the computer started up that read: "Your PC is now stoned. Legalise marijuana." There are more than 90 variants of the virus — and last year it resurfaced to infect a number of laptops running Microsoft Windows after anti-virus programs detected the virus but failed to remove it.

Tequila (1991) ... one of the first widespread viruses to use stealth techniques in order to avoid detection, Tequila was particularly dangerous as it couldn't be removed from the infected computer's memory.

Tequila infected computers by writing an unencrypted copy of itself to sectors of the system hard disk and modifying the master boot record. It used a scrambling method to avoid disassembly, changing itself from one infection to the next.

Michelangelo (1991) ... the Michelangelo virus sparked a media frenzy in 1992, one year after its discovery. After spreading quietly for months, the virus activated on March 6, 1991 — the birth date of its namesake — destroying data on tens of thousands of computers by overwriting parts of the hard disk with random data.

In the weeks before March 6, 1992, the Michelangelo virus became a major news event with constant warnings about its destructive potential. The media coverage descended into hysteria with predictions Michelangelo would wipe out millions of computers. However when March 6 finally arrived only around 10,000 computers were infected, and anti-virus companies were accused of creating hype about the virus to increase sales.

ILOVEYOU (2000) ... as the internet became more popular virus creators turned to programs such as worms — pieces of malicious code that, unlike viruses, are not attached to a "host" file and can reproduce themselves.

The most destructive worm of all time was ILOVEYOU, also known as LoveLetter, which spread by email and disguised itself as a romantic message to the recipient. If opened, it would send itself to everyone in the user's address book, clogging email systems around the world.

ILOVEYOU reached up to 45 million people in one day, causing more than $5 billion of damage with large corporations including the Pentagon and British Parliament forced to shut down their email systems.

Monopoly (2000) ... working in a similar way to ILOVEYOU, the Monopoly worm sent itself by email boasting "proof" that Microsoft boss Bill Gates was guilty of monopoly. At the time, Microsoft was immersed in a legal battle over its attempts to bundle Internet Explorer with its Windows operating system which led to accusations of abusing monopoly power.

The worm was delivered through an attachment called "Monopoly.vbs" that, when opened, displayed an humorous image of Bill Gates on a Monopoly game board. It then attempted to mass-mail itself to all of the user's Outlook contacts.

AnnaKournikova (2001) ... more a nuisance than a threat, this worm masqueraded as a picture of tennis star Anna Kournikova and relied on the public's fondness for the blonde pin-up in order to spread itself.

AnnaKournikova was short-lived and spread via Outlook email with the subject line "Here you have, ;o)", with an attachment called AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs. Once opened, the worm copied itself to the Windows directory and sent the file to all contacts in the user's Outlook address book.

AnnaKournikova scourged numerous Australian Federal Government Departments and large companies, with some receiving thousands of emails per hour. The worm's creator said he wanted to pay homage to Anna Kournikova as she "deserves some attention". He succeeded spectacularly.

Nimda (2001) ... before Nimda, worms were spread simply by copying or emailing themselves. Nimda used this method but also moved via server-to-server web traffic, infecting shared network hard drives and downloading itself to users who were browsing websites hosted on infected servers.

The result was hundreds of thousands of infections on servers and home computers and a slowdown in internet traffic as Nimda searched for vulnerable servers to attack. Some media reports suggested there may be a link between the virus and Al-Qaeda, as the worm was released in September 2001 — though this was proven to be false .

Sasser (2004) ... a German teenager boasted about becoming the hero of his class after writing the potent Sasser worm that could spread without user intervention. Sasser exploited a operating system flaw, prompting some computers using Windows XP and Windows 2000 systems to continually crash and reboot. However it was easily stopped by a well-configured firewall or by Windows Update downloads.

Sasser caused disruption worldwide, halting Australia's Railcorp trains as operators couldn't communicate with signalmen and forcing the cancellation of 40 Delta Air Lines trans-Atlantic flights. Over 400 post office branches in Taiwan had to revert to using pen and paper after more than a thousand of its machines were hit by the virus.

Storm (2007) ... the worst virus to hit computers in recent times, Storm is classed as a "superworm". It has become well-known for the way it constantly morphs into new forms and finds ways to exploit people's weaknesses. In 2007 it infected thousands of computers by masquerading as an email about a weather disaster, and then mutated and spread with another fake attachment infecting 10 million computers.

Storm continues to infect unsuspecting users today, with subject lines focusing on a range of topics from Facebook to love interests. Recent versions can disguise themselves from virus scans and even shut down security programs. A warning has been issued about emails claiming the Beijing Olympics will be delayed or cancelled due to earthquake damage, which appear to contain a link to a video but in fact are the Storm worm in disguise.
